Description

This exquisite 14th-15th century Late Pagan Buddha statue represents a significant piece of Burmese heritage, showcasing the artistry of the Bagan period. Standing at 54 cm tall and 34 cm wide, this wooden statue is adorned with traces of 24-karat gold, hinting at its historical importance and the skilled craftsmanship of its creators.

The statue embodies the Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture symbolizing the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment, where he touches the earth to call upon it as a witness to his realization. This particular mudra is central to Buddhist teachings, signifying the breaking of ignorance and the attainment of supreme knowledge.

Originating from Myanmar, the Bagan region was a vibrant cultural and religious hub from the 9th to the 13th century, characterized by thousands of temples and stupas that still stand today. This statue exemplifies the artistic style prevalent during this period, marked by serene expressions and intricate detailing. The enduring reverence for such artworks highlights the rich spiritual traditions of Buddhism in Myanmar.

As a true museum piece, this statue not only serves as a collector's item but also as a reminder of the rich historical and spiritual journey of the Buddhist faith in Southeast Asia. Its unique presence brings a touch of history and artistry into any space.
