Description

This antique Burmese Buddha head is an exquisite representation of Shan (Tai Yai) artistry from the early 20th century. Standing at 59.5 cm, including the stand, and weighing 4.8 kg, this lacquerware sculpture showcases intricate craftsmanship that reflects the rich cultural heritage of Burma (Myanmar).

The Buddha head features traces of 24-karat gilding, hinting at its former splendor. The gilding not only enhances its visual appeal but also signifies the reverence associated with representations of the Buddha in Buddhist culture. The delicate features are emblematic of the serene and tranquil essence found in traditional Buddhist art, inviting contemplation and meditation.

Burma has a long-standing history with Buddhism, having adopted the religion around the 3rd century BCE. As a result, the region has produced numerous remarkable artifacts and sculptures, each portraying the profound spiritual significance of the teachings of the Buddha. This piece embodies the characteristics of Shan style, which is known for its unique fusion of local and historical influences.

With a width of 27.5 cm and a depth of 24.3 cm, this statue serves as a striking centerpiece for any collection, celebrating the deep-rooted spiritual lineage and artistic expression of a culture that has profoundly influenced Southeast Asia.
