Description

This exquisite pair of antique wooden Burmese monk statues, standing at 30 cm in height, showcases the rich artistic traditions of Burma (Myanmar) during the 19th century. Crafted from wood and gilded with 24 karat gold, these statues reflect the Mandalay style, renowned for its intricate artistry and spiritual significance.

The representation of the monks illustrates a deep cultural reverence for Buddhism in the region. One statue is depicted in the Namaskara posture, emphasizing a gesture of respect and salutation, which is a central aspect of Buddhist practice. The monks are beautifully detailed, capturing the serene expressions associated with meditation and prayer, key components of the monastic life.

Burma has a long history steeped in Buddhism, influencing its art and architecture. The 19th century was a period marked by the flourishing of Burmese artistry, particularly in religious iconography. Artisans dedicated their skills to creating sacred figures that not only served decorative purposes but also played significant roles in the spiritual life of communities.

As collectors of Asian art often seek authentic pieces that embody historical significance, this pair represents a remarkable intersection of craftsmanship, spirituality, and Burmese heritage. Weighing 3.59 kg and with dimensions of 19 cm wide and 20.5 cm deep, these statues are both a visual delight and a testament to the enduring legacy of Burmese culture.
