Description

This antique wooden gilded Burmese offering vessel, hailing from Burma (Myanmar), exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship of the Shan (Tai Yai) style, popular in the 19th century. Standing at an impressive height of 69 cm and adorned with 24-karat gold, this vessel represents both a functional and ceremonial object, traditionally used in Buddhist rituals to hold offerings to deities and spirits.

The design is characterized by its elegant silhouette, with a rounded base that tapers into a slender neck, creating a harmonious balance and aesthetic appeal. The intricate workmanship not only showcases the artisans’ skill but also reflects the cultural significance of such vessels in Shan society, where they played a vital role in religious practices and community gatherings.

Historically, Burma has been a melting pot of cultures and traditions, with Buddhism deeply woven into the fabric of everyday life. The use of gilded elements signifies reverence and devotion, as gold is often associated with purity and spiritual light in various cultures, particularly in Southeast Asia.

This offering vessel, weighing 2.9 kg and featuring a 33 cm diameter base, serves not only as a stunning display piece but also as a tangible connection to the rich spiritual heritage and artistic legacy of Burma, inviting the viewer to appreciate the artistry and history embedded in its form.
