Description

This exquisite pair of antique wooden monk statues from Burma (Myanmar) dates back to the 19th century and embodies the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the region. Crafted from wood and adorned with 24-karat gold leaf, the statues stand at 17.5 cm tall and measure 15 cm in width and 18.5 cm in depth, collectively weighing 1.13 kg.

The Mandalay style is characterized by its intricate detailing and grace, reflecting the artistic traditions of the Mandalay period, which flourished in the late 19th century in Myanmar. This era is renowned for its focus on detailed expressions and dynamic postures, showcasing the artisan's skill in creating lifelike representations of revered figures.

The statue on the left assumes a Namaskara stance, which symbolizes respect and reverence, often associated with devotion in Buddhist practice. This gesture emphasizes a heightened connection to spirituality, marking the figures as representations of peace and meditation.

Burma’s history is deeply intertwined with Buddhism, which was introduced in the region around the 3rd century BCE. Over the centuries, the art of statue-making flourished, influenced by local traditions as well as religious practices. These monks serve not only as aesthetic decor but also as meaningful symbols of faith and tranquility, making them an exceptional addition to any collection.
