Description

This exquisite 12th-century bronze Pagan Buddha statue, originating from Burma (Myanmar), reflects the rich heritage of the Bagan period, a time when Buddhism flourished in the region. Measuring 11.1 cm in height, this rare artifact showcases traces of the original 24 karat gilding, a testament to its historical significance and artistic craftsmanship.

The Bagan style, characterized by its serene expressions and well-defined figures, was instrumental in the development of Burmese art. The statue embodies the Bhumisparsha, or Earth Touching Mudra, symbolizing the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called upon the Earth to witness his attainment of nirvana. This mudra signifies stability and grounding, invoking a connection between the spiritual and physical realms.

The Pagan period, spanning from the 11th to 13th centuries, was marked by the construction of thousands of stupas and temples, many of which housed similar statues. These bronzes were often used in religious practices and as offerings, reflecting the profound reverence for the Buddha in ancient Burmese culture.

Owning this original bronze Pagan Buddha statue not only offers a glimpse into the stylistic attributes of historical Burmese art but also serves as a reminder of a pivotal era in the spread of Buddhism throughout Southeast Asia. Its rarity and historical significance make it a valuable addition to any collection.
