Description

This exquisite antique bronze statue of the Ava Buddha, dating from the 15th to 16th century, exemplifies the remarkable artistry of Burmese craftsmanship. Standing at 20.7 cm in height, with a width of 15.4 cm and a depth of 9.5 cm, it weighs 1.51 kg, making it a substantial piece for any collection.

The Ava style, originating from the historical kingdom of Ava (Inwa) in Myanmar, reflects a period when Burmese art flourished, heavily influenced by both the Mon and Shan cultures. The Ava Buddha is distinguished by its refined facial features and serene expression, embodying the essence of tranquility and wisdom that Buddhism promotes. The intricate details and craftsmanship are evident in the delicate representation of the drapery and the finely carved hair.

This statue is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture that signifies the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called upon the Earth to bear witness to his awakening. This mudra illustrates themes of steadfastness and spiritual grounding, pivotal to Buddhist teachings.

Myanmar's rich cultural heritage and its strategic location along trade routes contributed to the diverse influences seen in its art, making this Ava Buddha not only a striking decorative piece but also a historical artifact that carries profound significance. It stands as a testament to the cultural legacy of a country renowned for its spiritual devotion and artistic expression.
