Description

This Antique Burmese Shan Buddha, crafted in the 17th century, reflects the rich artistry and spiritual heritage of Myanmar (Burma). Standing at 31.5 cm tall, this bronze statue exemplifies the Shan style, characterized by its serene facial expression and graceful posture.

The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, a significant gesture symbolizing the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the Earth to witness his attainment of Buddhahood. This mudra emphasizes the themes of grounding and stability, illustrating the Buddha's connection to the Earth and his triumph over ignorance.

Burma's history is deeply intertwined with Buddhism, particularly in the Shan State, where various ethnic groups contributed to a vibrant tapestry of artistic expression influenced by both local and external styles. The details of the statue, including the intricate lotus pedestal and the distinct elongated ear lobes, signify wisdom and the renunciation of materialism.

This remarkable piece, weighing 2.04 kg, offers not just a glimpse into the cultural and historical context of the region, but also serves as a timeless reminder of the spiritual journey toward enlightenment. Its presence invites contemplation and appreciation of the enduring legacy of Buddhist art in Myanmar.
