Description

This antique wooden Buddha statue from Burma (Myanmar) represents a significant piece of 19th-century craftsmanship, measuring 12.7 cm in height, 7.7 cm in width, and 3.9 cm in depth. Gilded with 24-karat gold, the statue showcases the exquisite artistry characteristic of the Mandalay style, which originated from the city of Mandalay, a historical hub of Burmese culture and tradition.

The Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture symbolizing the moment of enlightenment when the Buddha called the Earth to witness his attainment of truth. This gesture, often associated with meditation and grounding, reflects the spiritual journey and teaching of the Buddha.

Burma has a rich history of Buddhism, with its introduction dating back to the 1st century. Over the centuries, the practice has significantly influenced local art, architecture, and societal values. The Mandalay period is particularly noted for its ornate religious statues, demonstrating devotion and artistry that have captivated many.

This statue not only holds aesthetic value but also serves as a cultural artifact, representing the devotion of the Burmese people to their faith. It is a meaningful addition to any collection, evoking a sense of tranquility and reverence for the historical and spiritual narratives it embodies.
