Description

This antique wooden Lanna Buddha statue is a remarkable piece from Thailand, crafted in the 19th century and standing at a height of 50.6 cm. Its aesthetic beauty is enhanced by a gilding of 24-karat gold, giving it a radiant presence. The statue features inscriptions on the base, likely indicating the name of the donor, which adds a personal historical touch to this artifact.

The Lanna style, originating from the northern region of Thailand, is known for its graceful figures and intricate detailing, reflecting the cultural and spiritual influences of the area. Lanna art flourished between the 13th and 18th centuries, characterized by a blend of indigenous and Burmese stylistic elements. This statue exemplifies such craftsmanship, showcasing the elegance and serenity associated with Buddhist iconography.

The Bhumisparsha mudra, represented in this statue, symbolizes the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment, where he calls the Earth to witness his transformation. This gesture embodies deep spiritual significance, representing the overcoming of ignorance and the attainment of wisdom.

Thailand's rich history and cultural heritage surrounding Buddhism have made it a vital center for Buddhist art and sculpture. Collectively, the craftsmanship, historical context, and symbolic meaning of this statue make it a significant piece for any collection, serving as a timeless representation of spiritual art.
