Description

This exquisite antique wooden Shan Buddha statue, originating from Burma (Myanmar), exemplifies the rich artistic traditions of the Shan people, also known as the Tai Yai. Dating back to the 19th century, this piece stands at an impressive 51.5 cm tall and is gilded with 24-karat gold, showcasing the skilled craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility of its time.

The Shan style is characterized by elegant, elongated forms and a serene expression, which this statue embodies beautifully. The Buddha is captured in a seated posture, embodying tranquility and introspection. The statue's intricately carved details reflect the cultural and spiritual heritage of Myanmar, where Buddhism has been a pivotal influence since the 11th century. This era saw a flourishing of artistic expression rooted in religious themes, with artisans striving to convey the divine qualities of the Buddha.

Notably, the mudra represented in this statue is the Bhumisparsha, or "earth-touching" gesture. This gesture symbolizes the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment, where he calls upon the earth to witness his resolve to attain liberation from suffering.

As a cultural emblem, the Shan Buddha statue serves not only as a decorative object but also as a significant representation of faith and the enduring legacy of Burmese craftsmanship, making it a remarkable addition to any collection.
