Description

This exquisite wooden statue of a Chinese laughing Buddha measures 36 cm in height and weighs 2.64 kg. Crafted in the mid-20th century, it represents a rich tradition of Buddhist symbolism, embodying joy and contentment. The laughing Buddha, often referred to as Budai or Hotei, is recognized for his cheerful expression and plump belly, which symbolize prosperity and happiness.

The statuette features Budai surrounded by playful children, emphasizing the value of joy and the innocence of childhood within Chinese culture. This design element is rooted in the belief that laughter brings good fortune and spiritual well-being. The choice of wood as a material echoes traditional Chinese craftsmanship, where artisans often chose natural elements to reflect harmony and connection with nature.

Originating from China, this statue not only serves as a decorative piece but also as a talisman for good luck and serenity. Its provenance from the estate of a Dutch private collector adds historical depth, suggesting appreciation of Eastern art and its cultural narratives beyond its geographical origins. This piece is an ideal addition for those who cherish meaningful art that bridges cultural heritage with the essence of joy.
