Description

This exquisite Old Bronze Burmese Crowned Buddha, originating from Burma (Myanmar), stands at 34.5 cm tall and weighs 3.5 kg. Crafted in the early 20th century, this piece exemplifies the Shan style, also known as Tai Yai, which is characterized by intricate detailing and a regal appearance. The Buddha is depicted seated in a meditative pose, adorned with a distinctive crown, which signifies both spiritual enlightenment and authority.

The choice of bronze as a material highlights the craftsmen's expertise and the cultural significance of metalworking in Burmese art. The crowned Buddha is traditionally symbolic of wisdom and serenity, embodying the essence of Buddhist teachings. The serene facial expression and meticulous details of the attire reflect the devotion and skill of the artisans who created such statues, meant to inspire peace and contemplation.

This particular statue features the Bhumisparsha mudra, which represents the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment, a powerful symbol in Buddhist practice that signifies the calling of the Earth to witness his resolve.

Burma has a rich history intertwined with Buddhism, serving as a cradle for various forms of Buddhist art that evolved over centuries, and pieces like this reflect the profound spiritual heritage of the region. This sculpture not only serves as a decorative object but also as a reminder of the deep cultural and spiritual narratives of Southeast Asia.
