This exquisite Old Burmese lacquerware betelnut box, originating from Burma (Myanmar) in the early 20th century, showcases the rich traditional craftsmanship of the region. Standing at 13.8 cm in height with a diameter of 15.9 cm, this piece exemplifies the meticulous artistry involved in lacquerware production, which has been an integral part of Burmese culture for centuries.

Lacquerware in Myanmar is renowned for its durability and aesthetic appeal, being crafted by layering natural sap from the lacquer tree onto a base material, often bamboo or wood. This process not only protects the item but also allows for intricate designs to be created. The vibrant coloration and smooth finish seen in this betelnut box highlight the skill and expertise of the artisans.

The betelnut box itself serves a cultural purpose, traditionally used to hold betel leaves, areca nuts, and other accompaniments for chewing. This practice has significant social and ceremonial importance within Burmese communities, often associated with hospitality and social gatherings.

Through the centuries, lacquerware has become a symbol of Burmese identity, passing down techniques from generation to generation. This betelnut box is not just a functional item but a reflection of the artistic legacy and cultural significance of Myanmar, celebrating its rich history and craftsmanship. With a weight of 657 grams, this piece is both substantial and enchanting, making it a valuable addition to any collection.
