Description

This rare antique Japanese Amida Buddha statue, standing 116 cm tall with a 47 cm figure, embodies the rich spiritual heritage of Japan during the Edo period (18th century). Crafted from wood and luxuriously gilded in 24-karat gold, the statue is not only a visually stunning piece but also a profound representation of Buddhist beliefs.

Amida Buddha, known as the Buddha of Infinite Light, symbolizes compassion and wisdom. His traditional depiction often features a mandorla—a halo radiating divine presence—enhancing the statue's spiritual significance. The exquisite craftsmanship reveals intricate detailing, particularly in the beautifully carved mandorla, and is complemented by a lotus pedestal, showcasing the theme of purity often associated with Buddhism.

This statue comes from a prominent French private collection, solidifying its provenance and history. The Vitarka mudra, which signifies the teaching and transmission of Dharma, further enriches its meaning, inviting contemplation on the nature of enlightenment and the sharing of knowledge.

Japan, with its deep-rooted Buddhist traditions, has a history of producing such remarkable works of art that serve both as religious symbols and artifacts of cultural significance. This statue, in very good condition, stands as a testament to centuries of artistic mastery and spiritual devotion.
