Description

This remarkable antique Buddha statue, hailing from Burma (Myanmar), stands at an impressive 139 cm in height and boasts a width of 120 cm and depth of 80 cm. Crafted in the 19th century, this statue is a fine representation of the Mandalay style, known for its intricate details and expressive features. The exquisite inlaid eyes and fingernails enhance its lifelike presence, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship typical of its era.

Originally, this statue likely held significant importance within a temple setting, serving as a focal point for worship and reflection. The Bhumisparsha mudra, or "Earth Touching" gesture, symbolizes the moment of Buddha's enlightenment and his acceptance of the Earth as a witness to his awakening. This mudra is a powerful reminder of inner strength and resilience.

Burma has a rich history of Buddhist art, deeply intertwined with its cultural and religious practices. The construction of intricately designed Buddha statues has played a crucial role in the country's spiritual landscape. This piece, acquired from an Asian private collector, offers not just a glimpse into Burmese artistry but also an opportunity to connect with centuries of tradition.
