Description

This 16th-century Ava Buddha statue, originating from Burma (Myanmar), showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the Ava period, a significant era in the history of Burmese art. Standing at 31 cm tall and 23 cm wide, the statue is meticulously crafted from bronze and adorned with 24 karat gold leaf, exemplifying the era's focus on opulence and spiritual symbolism.

The Ava style is characterized by its serene facial expressions and gentle postures, intended to evoke calm and mindfulness. This particular statue embodies the Bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture symbolizing the moment of Buddha's enlightenment, when he reached out to touch the Earth as a witness to his spiritual realization. This gesture encapsulates the core of Buddhist philosophy, representing the grounding of spiritual truths.

The 16th century was a period of political and cultural transformation in Myanmar, marked by the flourishing of Buddhist monastic architecture and sculpture. The Ava Kingdom, being a main center of Buddhist learning and art, produced numerous pieces that reflect profound religious devotion and skilled craftsmanship. This statue serves not only as an artistic representation but also as a reminder of the rich spiritual heritage that has shaped Burmese culture throughout history.
