Description

This antique bronze Mandalay Buddha statue, originating from Burma (Myanmar), stands at a height of 34.8 cm and weighs 5.09 kg. Crafted in the late 19th century, this piece exemplifies the intricacies of Mandalay style, known for its elegant proportions and serene expressions. The statue features inlaid eyes, enhancing its contemplative presence.

The Mandalay school of art emerged during the Konbaung Dynasty, a period marked by a flourishing of Buddhist artistry. This statue reflects the local devotion to Buddhism and the craftsmanship that characterized the time, employing techniques passed down through generations. The classic seated posture of the Buddha symbolizes meditation and spiritual enlightenment, central themes within Buddhist philosophy.

The Bhumisparsha mudra, associated with the Buddha's enlightenment, is represented by the figure’s hand reaching towards the earth, symbolizing the moment of his awakening beneath the Bodhi tree. This gesture signifies the Buddha’s call for the Earth to witness his attainment of enlightenment, invoking the ground as a source of strength and stability.

Burma’s rich cultural heritage and longstanding Buddhist traditions provide a profound backdrop for this exquisite statue. It not only serves as a spiritual icon but also as a historical testament to the region’s artistic and religious legacy, making it a treasured addition for collectors and admirers of Buddhist art.
