Description

This antique wooden Burmese Shan Buddha stands at a height of 54.2 cm and is intricately designed with traces of its original 24 karat gilding. Dating back to the 18th century, this piece represents the Shan style, also known as Tai Yai, which is characterized by its elegant proportions and serene expression.

The figure depicts the Bhumisparsha mudra, symbolizing the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment, where he calls the Earth to witness his claims to enlightenment. This gesture is deeply significant within Buddhist tradition, representing the triumph over Mara, the personification of temptation and illusion.

Originating from Burma (Myanmar), this statuette reflects the rich history and cultural tapestry of the region, where Buddhism has been a predominant spiritual influence for centuries. During the 18th century, the Shan states were a center for artistic expression, fostering unique styles that blended local traditions with external influences.

Crafted from wood, this Buddha not only serves as a sacred object of devotion but also as a historical artifact, illustrating the craftsmanship and religious significance that flourish in Burmese culture. Measuring 17.3 cm in width and 11.3 cm in depth, and weighing 1.89 kg, this statue is a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhist art in Southeast Asia.
