Description

This remarkable antique marble statue of the Ava Buddha, originating from Burma (Myanmar), is a stunning representation of Buddhist artistry from the 17th century. Standing at 85 cm tall, the figure showcases exquisite craftsmanship, with traces of its original lacquer and 24-karat gilding enhancing its beauty.

The Ava period, which lasted from the 14th to the 18th century, is known for its distinctive style that reflected the region's cultural and religious syncretism. This statue exemplifies the elegant form and serene expression characteristic of Burmese Buddha representations. The traditional seated pose, along with the engraved base, highlights the artistic adeptness of the era.

The statue features the Bhumisparsha mudra, which depicts the Buddha touching the earth, symbolizing his enlightenment and the moment he called upon the earth as a witness to his spiritual awakening. This gesture emphasizes the theme of grounding oneself in reality and is significant in Buddhist teachings.

Weighing 84.6 kg and measuring 43.5 cm in width and 25.6 cm in depth, this piece not only serves as a striking decorative item but also as a profound symbol of peace and enlightenment. Its historical significance and aesthetic appeal make it a treasured addition to any collection, reflecting the rich spiritual heritage of Myanmar.
