Description

This stunning antique bronze Ava Buddha from Burma, measuring 40 cm in height, is a remarkable testament to the rich heritage of Burmese craftsmanship. Crafted during the 17th to 18th century, this statue embodies the traditional Ava style, characterized by serene facial expressions and meticulous detailing. Gilded with 24-karat gold, it radiates an aura of tranquility and elegance.

The Ava period, known for its artistic fervor, saw the flourishing of Buddhist art in Burma. Statues from this time often showcase distinctive features, such as elongated earlobes and a stylized ushnisha on the head, symbolizing spiritual wisdom. This piece's serene gaze and composed posture invite contemplation, making it a fitting representation of Buddhist ideals.

In this statue, the Buddha performs the Bhumisparsha mudra, an essential gesture indicating the moment of enlightenment, as he touches the earth in testimony to his awakening. This mudra is a powerful symbol of the Buddha's victory over temptation, representing the grounding of spiritual knowledge in the material world.

Burma, now known as Myanmar, has a complex history shaped by its diverse cultures and religious traditions. The devotion to Buddhism has profoundly influenced its art and architecture, with such statues serving not just as decorative items but as focal points for meditation and worship. This antique piece not only offers aesthetic value but also a meaningful connection to centuries of spiritual heritage.
